Drawing Modeling Rigging Texturing Animating Compositing
I drew the storyboard sketches in Procreate, following the elephants as they enjoy a barbecue and gaze at the moon. The moon then transforms into a mooncake, leading to a final scene of an elephant enjoying plenty of mooncakes and pomelos. I wanted to capture the joy and comfort of this holiday.
The Moon Festival is a time for family reunions in many Asian cultures. In my family, we celebrate by making mooncakes, having a barbecue, admiring the full moon, and eating pomelos. Through this 3D animation, I wanted to share these traditions and the warmth of celebrating together.
I modeled the assets in Maya and used an SVG file to create the design on the mooncake’s surface. For the textures, I combined ChatGPT-generated images with texturing in Substance 3D Painter. I then brought the assets into Cinema 4D for IK rigging and keyframe animation.
A special thank you to William Lai for creating the flowing mooncake filling simulation in Houdini.
